My kids finally understood why the moon changes shape after we built this model together. The way the Earth and Moon actually orbit around the Sun with the crank mechanism makes the phases click visually.

The model pieces are sturdy enough for a classroom demo, and the joint that connects Earth to the Sun rotates smoothly. It's a bit tricky to get the moon's orbit aligned perfectly at first, but once you do, tracking the lunar phases becomes really clear.
